But most local governments have less understanding of the social and demographic composition of communities that experience flood impacts outside of flood zones. Years of research and evidence from storms have highlighted social inequalities in areas with a high risk of flooding. Racial disparities in flooding outside the zones ![]() So far, FEMA hasn’t taken into account the impact climate change is having on extreme weather and sea level rise. If greenhouse gas emissions continue to increase at a high rate, computer models suggest that the chances of a severe storm dropping 20 inches of rain on Texas in any given year will increase from about 1% at the end of the last century to 18% at the end of this one, a chance of once every 5.5 years. Third, the era of climate change scuttles conventional assumptions.Īs the planet warms, extreme storms are becoming more common and severe. FEMA-delineated flood zones are the major factor shaping flood mitigation behaviors. The logic goes: if I’m not in the 100-year floodplain, then I’m not at risk. Second, binary thinking can lead people to an underaccounting of risk, and that can mean communities fail to take steps that could protect a neighborhood from flooding. FEMA is required to assess whether updates are needed every five years, but the majority of maps are older. Famously, New York City was updating its maps when Hurricane Sandy hit in 2012 but hadn’t finished, meaning flood maps in effect were from 1983. Moreover, the process for updating floodplain maps is locally variable and can take years to complete. Urbanization matters because impervious surfaces – think pavement and buildings – are not effective sponges like natural landscapes can be. Three reasons stand out.įirst, some places rely on relatively old FEMA maps that don’t account for recent urbanization. Understanding why areas outside the 100-year flood zones are flooding more often than the FEMA maps suggest involves larger social and environmental issues. Other researchers find an even higher margin, with 2.6 to 3.1 times more people exposed to serious flooding in a 100-year storm than FEMA estimates. One of those models, from the First Street Foundation, estimates that the number of properties at risk in a 100-year storm is 1.7 times higher than the FEMA maps suggest. New risk models point to a similar conclusion: Flood risk in these areas outstrips expectations in the current FEMA flood maps. Harris County, home to Houston, now recommends all households have flood insurance, whether they’re in a FEMA flood zone or not. ![]() ![]() ![]() To facilitate the adoption and implementation of wastewater surveillance more broadly, it is essential to develop and evaluate flexible workflows that can be readily adopted across a range of settings, community needs, and resource availability (D’Aoust et al. However, small and rural communities are often underrepresented in wastewater surveillance programs, due in part to local resource and infrastructure constraints (D’Aoust et al. A growing number of public health, wastewater utility, commercial, and other laboratories are expanding their capacity to conduct routine wastewater surveillance (Naughton et al. With the success of these initial efforts, wastewater surveillance is now being formally adopted into state-wide and national public health programs. In these ways, wastewater surveillance provides an indiscriminate, noninvasive, and cost-effective approach to community surveillance for both COVID-19 and other diseases.Īs an early response to the COVID-19 pandemic, wastewater surveillance for SARS-CoV-2 was implemented rapidly by research laboratories across the globe (Bivins et al. 2021), and may serve as an early warning system for disease outbreaks or surges in transmission (Xagoraraki and O’Brien 2020, Ahmed et al. ![]() Wastewater surveillance is useful for detection of both asymptomatic and symptomatic cases of infection (Schmitz et al. Previous studies have demonstrated that viral levels in wastewater correlate with COVID-19 incidence and hospitalization rates (Peccia et al. ![]() 2020, Sanjuán and Domingo-Calap 2021, Wu et al. The relationship between SARS-CoV-2 viral levels in wastewater and reported COVID-19 cases has been well-documented (Polo et al. These excreta, collected by the sewage network, can be monitored in downstream wastewaters as a proxy for disease surveillance (Medema et al. Individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 shed viruses and viral RNA through respiratory fluids, saliva, urine, and stool (Kitajima et al. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious respiratory disease caused by the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). These results indicate that a direct-extraction-based workflow for SARS-CoV-2 wastewater surveillance can provide informative and actionable results. With this approach, we detected as few as five cases of COVID-19 per 100 000 individuals. To compensate for the method’s high limit of detection (approximately 10 6–10 7 copies l −1 in wastewater), we extracted multiple small-volume replicates of each wastewater sample. N1 and N2 assay positivity, viral concentration, and flow-adjusted daily viral load correlated significantly with per-capita case reports of COVID-19 at the county-level (ρ = 0.69–0.82). SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA was detected in 76% (193/254) of influent samples, and the recovery of the surrogate bovine coronavirus was 42% (IQR: 28%, 59%). Bypassing any concentration step, low volumes (280 µl) of influent wastewater were extracted using a commercial kit, and immediately analyzed by RT-qPCR for the SARS-CoV-2 N1 and N2 gene targets. Composite influent wastewater samples were collected weekly for 1 year between June 2020 and June 2021 in Athens-Clarke County, Georgia, USA. ![]() To address some of these issues, we conducted a longitudinal study implementing a simplified workflow for SARS-CoV-2 detection from wastewater, using a direct column-based extraction approach. Workflows for wastewater surveillance generally rely on concentration steps to increase the probability of detection of low-abundance targets, but preconcentration can substantially increase the time and cost of analyses while also introducing additional loss of target during processing. Wastewater surveillance has proven to be an effective tool to monitor the transmission and emergence of infectious agents at a community scale. ![]() ![]() But it also helps that the hotel is near several restaurants, shopping centres, bars and terraces. ![]() ![]() Going the other way – using a lighter, less stiff bolt than recommended – can be more problematic, particularly with faster crossbows that transfer more energy to the shaft. You can overcompensate – use a heavier bolt with a stiffer spine – without too much of a problem. Third, make sure you are using a bolt with the proper spine for your bow. If anything is loose, tighten it up and your problem is probably solved. ![]() First, check all the screws, nuts and bolts holding your optic in place. So, let's go through a few of the most likely. ![]() You should also check that the arrow-retention spring is in good working order, as this piece is often connected to the ADF.Ĭrossbow fails to group well: There are several possibilities here. I've seen it happen on a crossbow where the ADF malfunctioned. The results can be as bad or worse than a dry fire. It's a good thing, because were that not the case, the bow could fire with a bolt in place but not in contact with the string. What's happening is that the bolt is not seated far enough back to make contact with the string and, more importantly, disengage the anti-dry-fire mechanism (ADF). I've encountered this issue several times with my fishing crossbow, probably because it spends so much time pointed downward.Īll things considered, this is a good problem. However, a far more likely cause is that the bolt is not pushed all the way back, or has slid forward. When cocked and loaded, crossbow fails to fire: It's possible that as in the previous example, the bow was not fully cocked. However, something is not working properly, and I would advise taking the bow to your local pro shop or contacting the manufacturer or place of purchase about possible repair or replacement. One solution is to simply click the safety on after cocking and continue as usual. Safety did not engage while cocking, but crossbow will fire: It shouldn't happen, but I've encountered this on bows from several different manufacturers. You should be able to simply re-attach your cocking mechanism and pull back farther, until you hear a distinct "click" and see that the safety has engaged. In other words, the string wasn't pulled all the way back, far enough to cock the bow and engage the safety mechanism. Safety did not engage while cocking, and crossbow will not fire: In all likelihood, the bow was short-cocked. In that case, make sure you are pulling the string all the way back. That used to be necessary on some crossbows, but for the most part, it no longer matters whether the safety is on safe or fire when cocking. Common ProblemsĬrossbow will not cock: This is less common than it used to be but could well be the result of not having the safety mechanism in the "fire" position while cocking. Below, I've listed five of the more common issues crossbow shooters might encounter, along with their causes and solutions. Regardless, sometimes our crossbows don't perform as well as we'd like. Sometimes, it's a matter of materials or manufacturing. ![]() ![]() Then, in 2020 Epic really went overboard when they dedicated all of Chapter 2: Season 4 to Marvel. ![]() All of these events added permanent cosmetics to the game, Over the course of only a few months, they held promotional events for Marvel’s Deadpool, Nike Jordans, John Wick, and Stranger Things. In May 2019, Epic started to push corporate in-game partnerships more aggressively. While these early promotional events were relatively unobtrusive to the Fortnite aesthetic and story, Epic’s cross-promotional events became more invasive with time. The virtual concert then opened the door for other music artists like Weezer and Travis Smith to collaborate with Epic on similar projects later on. This was the first example of a sponsored event adding permanent cosmetic options to the game. In early 2019, Fortnite hosted a Marshmello concert to nearly 11 million players, a revolutionary event the Marshmallow skin from which is still very popular. So the brief collaboration with Marvel felt mutually beneficial for Marvel and Epic at the time. Season 4 was superhero-themed and even featured the Carbide skin - which looks suspiciously like Ironman. The Marvel promotion was not Fortnite’s first foray into superheroes either. The story of the Thanos mode was also presented as completely separate from Fortnite’s world, rather than attempting to explain why Thanos was on the Fortnite island. It was promoting the Avengers and featured a mode that allowed players to become Thanos, but notably did not include any skins that would remain in the game permanently. Later in 2018, Epic held their first event for Marvel. These minor sports collaborations were unique and interesting at the time, and ultimately had little impact on the overall aesthetic of Fortnite. They followed that up with a collaboration with the NFL, allowing players to dress as their favorite American football team. ![]() With so many corporate sponsorships lately, Fortnite can sometimes feel more like a playable ad than a game to me.įortnite's escalating relationship with in-game advertisingįortnite’s first crossover event was in 2018 when they released soccer skins for the World Cup. While some of these crossovers made sense, as time has gone on, the endless deluge of crossover events and skins has worn me out and taken a negative toll on my enjoyment of the game. Over the past few years, in-game promotions in the form of events and skins have become an increasingly influential part of Epic’s monetization strategy for Fortnite. I am just annoyed at the constant addition of non-Fortnite characters into the Fortnite world in lieu of original storytelling. The addition of Antman annoyed me, not because I have an issue with Antman, I think Antman is dope. The new skin is the latest cross-over between Epic and Marvel. This past week Epic released a brand new Antman skin into the game. ![]() |
